Finding the Music in Language

Speech is percussive, naturally rhythmic and inherently musical. One of our essential questions in K-4 music is "How do we find the music in language?" Using nursery rhymes, proverbs, poetry, and playground chants students quickly identify rhythmic, linguistic and structural patterns of language and are able to seamlessly transfer these observations and discoveries to music making.

Recently the Clarkia analyzed three proverbs tied to their classroom unit of study. Using weather proverbs as a springboard, Clarkia students created movement and rhythmic patterns to complement the poetic meter and form of the each saying and then performed their short pieces for the class.
